My husband bought “It’s A Boy” cigars for the (upcoming) birth of our first baby. We were both wondering how it became a tradition for men to smoke a cigar when they are celebrating something.

If it’s a boy you pass out cigars. If it’s a girl you pass out donuts.
People that I know don’t actually buy the real cigars to smoke…they just buy the pink gum cigars if it’s a girl and the blue gum cigars if it’s a boy! I don’t know where the tradition comes from I just know that’s how we do it! Sorry I couldn’t help more…
Hunch, cigars were what very wealthy smoked, so they most likely became a status symbol. This may have been groomed into something showing successful completion by one or two movies. You Bet Your Life on TV is also a factor.
Cigars taste good,that’s why! jk
I think the person who said TV had a lot to do with it was right on!
May be to celebrate a new birth
