Article by ScottP Taylor

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tom Cruise. Mel Gibson. Harrison Ford. Sylvester Stallone.

What in the world do all of these high-octane megastars have in common? No, they’re not all starring in Mission: Testosterone, this summer’s most muscled blockbuster. But, they do share a unique bond. In fact, they share the same connection with such historically notable folks as Fidel Castro, W.C. Fields, and even King Edward VII.

How could kings, comedians, and revolutionary leaders have anything in common with the Terminator, Rambo, and Braveheart?

It’s simple: They all love a good cigar! No, actually, they all love a great cigar!

And, when it comes to great cigars, arguably there are none better today than those coming from rich soils and humid mountain hillsides of Nicaragua. Long having taken a backseat to the Cuban cigar-making dynasty, Nicaragua is making its mark on the international scene with the finest cigars found anywhere on the planet.

Just like its booming real estate market that has rebounded after natural disasters and political unrest to become one of the best places in the world to invest, the Nicaraguan cigar industry is benefiting and experiencing a renaissance as well. From the center of it cigar revolution in Esteli to Condega and all the way out to the Jalapa Valley, Nicaragua is home to the world’s best cigar makers, tobacco, and established and up-and-coming brands.

With so many great cigars to choose from, the problem for the cigar aficionado and the newbie alike becomes not “How can I find a good Nicaraguan cigar,” but where should I even start? To help you make your way through the jungle landscape of choice, let’s take a look at five all-time favorites.

5. Plasencia Organica Nesticos

Profile: small cigar, mild, but rich taste

Big things come in little packages! The world’s first 100% Certified Organic cigar, the Plasencia Organica Nesticos are pure handmade tobacco magic. These little cigars take advantage of Plansencia’s renowned three-year-aged, organically-grown Nicaraguan tobaccos and serve it up in a smoke-able size that allows you to enjoy big cigar flavor even when you don’t have a lot of time.

4. Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970, Robusto Grande.

Profile: strong, robust, earthy, woody, big, heavy-bodied…you get the idea, this cigar ain’t messing around!

This hefty all-Nicaraguan tobacco cigar was crafted to appeal to an American clientele who could no longer puff their favorite Havanas after the Cuban revolution. Let’s just call it like it is: The Robusto Grande is a big daddy of a cigar • ” both in size and flavor. There’s no getting around the fact that it packs a seriously rich blow with that characteristic Nicaraguan metallic twang. If you like your cigars to knock you out with a power-packed punch, this is your choice.

3. Felipe II Fat Boy

Profile: medium-bodied, earthy, spicy coffee bean aromas, roasted butter finish

Rated 90 by Cigar Aficionado, this ridiculously rich tasting cigar by Felipe Gregorio is definitely round and robust, but has a seamlessly smooth quality that makes it a definite contender. The Fat Boy’s small, but stocky size (3.5 x 55) gives it a definite “Don’t Mess with Me” attitude. When you’re feeling like a fine fatty at a reasonable rate, find yourself a Felipe II and get ready for a taste explosion.

2. Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series

Profile: medium to full-bodied, long finish, perfectly balanced.

If you want to feel like a celebrity, then you’ll want to take a pull on any cigar from the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series. Made to celebrate their 30th anniversary, this line is crafted from only their best tobaccos and is often quite difficult to find. However, when you do get your hands on one, you’ll experience a masterful cigar from first spark to final ash tap. Despite the price, this is a must-have in your collection.

1. Perdomo Edición de Silvio

Profile: robust, delicate tones, perfection

This exquisite cigar is considered by many to be one of the best in the world bar none. With a secret blend of the finest tobaccos, this is the holy grail of cigars. And, although it is by far the most exclusive (read: expensive) cigar on my list, it’s not to be missed. So, when you start making huge profits with your Nicaraguan real estate investments, you can experience a little decadence with a Perdomo Edicion de Silvio.

As you can quickly see, the Nicaraguan cigar revolution is in full swing • ” a rich variety of flavors that is unmatched anywhere in the world. With its fascinating history, the Nicaraguan cigar story is one that can’t be missed. When you light up any of the above cigars, you’ll know that you’ve found a new favorite in Nicaragua.

Cigars are made from special varieties of tobacco that require careful tending. Tobacco leaves intended to be used as cigar wrappers must be carefully grown and harvested to keep the leaves free of blemishes.

Cigar tobacco is grown in Central American countries, West Africa and Indonesia and the Connecticut River Valley in USA. Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaraguan, Cameroon, Mexico and United States tobaccos all have their characteristic flavours and give particular properties to a cigar. Check out http://www.cigars-now.info

Cuban tobacco is the best. It is usually strong and full bodied, and gives a spicy and aromatic flavor to a cigar.

Dominican tobacco is quite full flavored and is useful in the making of complex blends.

Ecuadorian tobacco is milder.

Honduras and Nicaragua produce a full bodied tobacco with a strong spicy flavor.

Mexican leaves are widely used as binder and filler in cigars.

Mexican tobacco leaves are commonly used as wrappers in dark Maduro cigars.

The Connecticut River Valley, in USA, produces some of the best wrapper leaf tobacco. The fine brown to brownish yellow leaf is used to make mild and medium bodied cigars. It is widely used on premium cigars. Find the cigars you are looking for at http://www.cigars-now.info

Cameroon and the Central African Republic produces a high quality wrapper leaf. It has fairly neutral characteristics and is used as a wrapper for full flavored filler tobaccos.

Indonesian tobacco wrapper leaves are often dark brown and have neutral flavors.

Philippine tobacco is mild but aromatic

Cigars may be hand-made or machine-made.

Hand-made cigars will naturally be more expensive and the leaf used to fill the cigars will often run the length of the cigar, rather than the shredded filler used in machine-made cigars.

Tobacco leaves grown for wrapping cigars are usually shade-grown under cheese-cloth tents because this gives a finer grained and more supple leaf. Sun grown tobacco used as filler in cigars will be thicker leaved with more prominent veins.

Cigar smokers usually have a range of favorite cigars that they smoke on different occasions. You will find current recommendations on websites and in magazines. If you have only recently discovered cigars then your best bet is to experiment. Be aware of the blend and type of cigars you smoke and <noindex>buy</noindex> more of the ones you like.

Cigars should be kept in a humidor. This will maintain the cigar at the correct temperature and humidity to ensure continued aging.

Cigar smoking fashions change, so you may find some types of cigar easier to find than others. If you are prepared to look hard enough and experiment widely you will find cigars that suit your palate

Like superior quality of wine, essence and savor of cigar are influenced by the soil of that nation. Sunlight and different conditions of soil influence qualities of leaves of tobacco. It is important to understand what makes smoking of cigar an exclusive event. A peep into the best regions in the world for cigar is provided below.

Well known cigars of the world are produced in Southern and Central Asia, Mexico and Cuba. Cigars produced in Cuba are the best in the world. It produces a large variety of most famous brands. Even after surviving cold war, the industry has been flourishing well. It has huge land for cultivation at central islands. The conditions here are most suitable for producing the best quality of tobacco and it really shows in the quality of the cigars. Absolute quality control of the fields is exercised by the government.

Indonesia also produces world class cigars with a vast variety of flavor. Besuki TBN shade -grown leaf is used for production of bulk of cigars. Shade green is a technique utilized for controlling the quantum of sunlight that falls on tobacco leaves. Nets made of muslin are specially used in Indonesia for protecting the tobacco leaves from sunlight.

The plants grown out of Sumatran seeds are used for manufacturing of cigars by the industries in Indonesia. These seeds have special flavor which gives prominence to the filler. Connecticut valley is famous for yellow cigars which are manufactured using shade green method. These medium size cigars are known as Connecticut shade and are the most expensive cigars.

Mexican cigars are milder and have a sweet smell. There is a wide range of cigars available in Mexico. Their best cigars are manufactured at San Andres Tuxtla. This regions climate allows tobacco leaves to achieve the finest quality. Aromas de San Andres and Santa Clara are the best cigars of Mexico.

If you have an ill-maintained cigar humidor, chances are, it is sitting on one of your shelf gathering dusts and waiting to be disposed at any given time. If you throw away the old humidor and have a new one still the dust problem is not solved and the result will be the same again.

The equatorial as well as the tropical regions produce tobacco from which cigars are made. But once cigars are manufactured and left these countries, the quality tends to degrade. Cigars when shipped from the origin country to the other place have to undergo many climatic and humidity changes. All these activities wrecks the taste of the cigar as it is used to mature in most controlled atmosphere.

This calls the need for cigar humidor. Usually the cigar humidor is made of wood which keeps the moisture of the cigar intact. The cigar retains its flavor as the moisture is not allowed to escape which is maintained by the humidifier.

People tend to commit the same mistake of placing the cigars in the humidors after buying them. It is absolutely wrong as the right humidity is needed first in the cigar humidors. If you try using the humidors immediately they will absorb the moisture of the cigars and it ruins the flavor of the cigar. The wood of the humidor has to be re-humidified so that the ideal humidity is set.

Unless there is a humidifier in the box the humidity inside the box can’t be maintained. Squirting the right amount of distilled water or humidification solution (propylene glycol and distilled water) will keep the humidity level in the box perfectly. Hygrometer would tell you if the humidor is keeping the right humidity inside.

The cigars and old wines have many things in common as they both mature the longer they are kept in the controlled environment. Keeping the humidor at 70 degrees Fahrenheit will help it to function properly. To know if you are getting the right humidity, your cigar humidor should have the humidifier and the hygrometer.

Lengthy related to the wealthy and powerful, cigars evoke photos of leisure and wealthy flavor. A culture across the art of smoking, created and debated by cigar aficionados, assembles numerous theories and equipment to facilitate or enhance smoking. Cigar smoking, very like wine tasting, has for many years been seen as a diversion of the elite of society. The general consensus is that Spain is the place cigars had been first produced, catching on shortly within the different European countries. Although manufactured in many alternative countries, Cuban cigars have been thought-about some of the flavorful and wealthy of all cigars for an considerable interval of time. This is because of the regional microclimates Cuba is blessed with, that are mentioned to provide the very best high quality tobacco. Combined with the talent of the nation’s cigar makers, the result’s a world commonplace in cigars. Other countries that produce sizeable amounts of tobacco and cigars include Brazil, Honduras, Ecuador, Mexico, Cameroon, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, and the United States. Many speculate that the rationale cigars have long caught the eye of so many lies in the way it’s manufactured. Hand wrapping is the premise of all prime quality cigars. In contrast to cigarettes, that are mass-produced by monumental machines, cigars bear a prolonged process of fermentation and aging (very like wine), creating delicate flavors and textures before they’re individually wrapped by craftsmen working with their own hands. This makes cigars highly particular person, every with a delicate distinctive character, the perfect of which give no smoky aftertaste at all.The style of cigars is also far more advanced than the flavor of cigarettes. Most cigars are created by wrapping three distinct and completely different layers of tobacco leaves collectively, yielding a depth of taste impossible from a cigarette. Lengthy leaves of tobacco are typically used because the filler in top quality cigars, though a mix of scraps may also be used. This creates complicated flavors delicate variations, and totally different textures. Cigarettes, then again, are mass-produced, stuffed from gargantuan hoppers containing usually just one kind of tobacco. Cigar taste variation is further diversified by the addition of non-tobacco flavorings. If desired, a cigar aficionado can find chocolate, apple, vanilla, and even espresso-flavored cigars! Commonest, nonetheless, are cigars flavored with expensive liquors.Even though cigars have long been loved for his or her easy and complicated flavors, smoking them does pose a considerable health risk. All tobacco merchandise comprise the addictive substance nicotine. Everybody has heard in regards to the unfavourable health risks of nicotine, but not everyone is aware of how it causes them.. As even the informal smoker can attest, nicotine is a stimulant that produces a light sense of euphoria. It is extremely addictive and cigar smoke incorporates a large number of toxins, carcinogens, and irritants. There’s nonetheless a major danger of growing various kinds of oral and larynx cancers even though most connoisseurs of cigars will avoid inhaling the smoke.Patrick E. Amiot

Believe it or not, you can come across two different schools of thought regarding mixing cigars in the same humidor. One group believes you absolutely do not mix, and the camp will talk of the benefits. When it comes down to it, your own experience can tell you which way to go.

In the Purest corner
In this corner, the belief is that if you keep all like cigars together, that helps in preserving all of their unique flavors and aromas. Ok, in the end you collect your sticks just because of those particular qualities. Some cigars have a more full bodied profile, and of course, others are mild.

Non Traditionalists say
Now in the other corner, people are not so called traditionalists believe that mixing cigars can potentially have real benefits. Keeping an assortment of varying cigars in one humidor helps flavors and aromas to enhance each other and actually improve their qualities.

In addition, the theory being that the older sticks could take on and absorb some moisture from the younger cigars.

Your Corner?
If you haven’t already determined your stance in the matter, it’s a great opportunity to see for yourself which corner you’re in. You can do sort of an experiment. Take a handful of your cigars of varying profiles and keep in one humidor. You don’t want to take too many of them due to possible undesired results and risk more than necessary. Now, keep them in that same environment for a minimum of a couple weeks, or more. All good things take some time. Also, you want to keep monitoring things like a constant 70% humidity level, and of course, making sure this particular box keeps a proper seal.

Some questions are in <noindex>order</noindex>
Now it’s the day of judgment. You want to take your time for a careful evaluation. When you test and smoke this test batch, some questions will help determine which corner you’re in.
Did any particular smoke change in flavor?
Did the flavors get enhanced or did they get ruined?
Did any of their aromas change?
Did wrapper leafs change in any quality?

Lastly, but very important, did dryer smokes pull in any moisture from others?
Of course, these factors will result from the conditions of the atmosphere the cigars were kept in. Given the environment was a constant 70% level and no moisture was able to leak out from an open seal, you should get a trustworthy batch to see what happened.

The questions mentioned above help you to see just where you stand judging from your preferences. You can judge which way you go in the debate. You decide from your personal experience with this, and not have to rely on what either side says.
