The MBM DestroyIt 3803 Strip-Cut shredder is a high-capacity centralized office shredder that is designed to meet the needs of a busy office setting. Here is a look at a few of the strengths and weaknesses of the DestroyIt 3803 Strip-Cut.
Strengths:
The 3803 Strip-Cut has a pretty powerful 1 Hp motor. The shredder’s cutting shafts are made from high-quality steel and come with a lifetime warranty from MBM. The system claims a sheet capacity of up to 23 sheets per pass and we didn’t have any trouble hitting that mark. It’s important to note, however, that these kind of results can vary a little bit depending on a couple of factors such as the quality of your power supply, the relative humidity in your geographical region, and the thickness of the paper you are shredding at any given time.
The 3803 Strip-Cut’s motor is rated for continuous use, meaning that you should be able to run the shredder just about as much as you want to. The motor features what MBM calls “double overheating protection,” which means that even if you do hit the shredder’s overheating zone, it will shut itself off for a cooling period.
The 3803 Strip-Cut shreds paper clips, staples and credit cards without any problem, but what we really appreciated was the shredder’s ability to handle compact discs. Confidential information comes in many forms these days, and it can be a little perplexing at times figuring out how to properly destroy items like CDs. The 3803 Strip-Cut makes it easy.
The 3803 Strip-Cut features an extra wide 16 inch throat width, so letter and legal sized sheets are easy handled, as well as larger sizes such as green bar computer printouts.
We always appreciate when shredder manufacturers pay attention to safety and we’re happy to say that the DestroyIt 3803 Strip Cut contains some nice safety features. There is a clear plastic guard across the feed opening that is controlled electronically and will keep fingers, clothing, and other objects well away from the cutting mechanism. There is also an automatic reverse mode should there ever be an accidental overfeed, and if the overfeed leads to a paper jam, the machine will shut itself off, preventing further problems. There is also automatic power cutoff when the bin door is ajar, and when the waste bag needs to be emptied.
The operation of the 3803 Strip-Cut could not be more plain and simple. It features a large, color coded and back-lit control pad. We like a machine that lets you know what mode it is in at all times, and the 3803 Strip-Cut excels in that regard. The shredder can be set for automatic on and off operation, so users can simply place the paper in the feed, and go on about their business with no need to turn the machine on and off.
The shred bag is a large forty two gallons, and the rollers that the bin comes on make it very easy to handle when emptying.
We like a machine that doesn’t noisily draw a lot of attention to itself when in operation, and the 3803 Strip-Cut excels in this regard as well.
Weaknesses:
Though the machine’s capacity is top notch in its class, as a strip-cut shredder, the 3803 doesn’t offer you a very high level of document security. If you need a shredder to make your office FACTA-compliant, we suggest you check out the Level 3 Security, cross cut version of the 3803.
This machine is a large centralized office shredder and as such, it comes with a fairly hefty pricetag. You might want to add this machine to your budget today if you think you might need it in the coming year.

The MBM DestroyIt 4002 Strip-Cut Shredder is a high-volume shredder designed for a heavy workload in a busy office setting. Here are a few of the strengths and weaknesses of the MBM DestroyIt 4002 Strip-Cut Shredder.
Strengths:
The 4002 Strip Cut is a powerful shredder that boasts some capabilities that are impressive indeed. The 1.75 horsepower motor is rather effective, allowing for the shredding of 35 sheets of paper per pass, and is rated for continuous use. As with all of MBM’s DestroyIt shredders, the 4002 Strip Cut has cutting heads that are made of a specially hardened German steel that chews right through any paper clips and staples. These high quality cutting heads allow you to save the time and effort of removing fasteners and MBM guarantees them for the life of the shredder. The MBM DestroyIt 4002 Strip Cut also handles credit cards without a problem, and most impressively, can also shred CDs and DVDs. We especially appreciate this ability for the modern office where you don’t always know how to properly discard certain types of media.
The throat width is an extra wide 16 inches which makes it easy to shred larger sized sheets of paper such as green bar computer paper, as well as all of the most common (letter and legal) sized sheets.
The Destroyit 4002 Strip Cut’s control button provides a wealth of information. MBM designed it to be large, easy to see and understand. The different modes are coded by color and are extremely well-lit so you’ll always know what the machine’s status is. There are electronic cells in the throat opening which allows the user to put the machine into auto mode. That means the machine will start up when the cells detect that there is paper in the throat and stops when the job is finished. In other words, you can just put paper in the machine and walk away to other tasks.
If you’ve ever read any of our shredder reviews, you know we always take a good hard look at the safety features that are offered, and we rather like those of the 4002 Strip-Cut. There is a plastic guard/bar that runs the length of the feed opening that’s electronically controlled, and keeps any hands, fingers, or any other objects safely away from the cutting heads. There’s also an auto reverse in case of an overfeed, and power cut off during paper jams, when the cabinet door is open, and when the waste receptacle is full.
Another thing we can always appreciate about a shredder – especially one that is designed for use in a busy centralized office setting, is the noise factor. The 4002 Strip-Cut excels in this regard as well. The gears are encased, which seems to help a lot, and the wood cabinet (which we really like the looks of, by the way) seems to soak up a lot of the rest of the sound.
Other things we liked about the 4002 Strip-Cut were the extra large 53-gallon bin, and the heavy duty casters for moving the shredder around the office.
Weaknesses:
The 4002 Strip-Cut is a beast, and can handle a lot of work. Our only problem with it is that it is a strip cut shredder, and we greatly prefer the security of cross cut. Laws passed by congress in 2005 require businesses to destroy certain types of information in a cross cut shredder, so it’s not just a matter of common sense. If you need higher security with all the features of the 4002 Strip-Cut (albeit at a slightly lower sheet capacity), we strongly encourage you to take a look at the cross-cut version of the Destroyit 4002, which is generally identically priced.
This is a large shredder and it must be shipped by truck. You will need to be sure that you have a way to get it off the truck and into your facility. If you don’t have a loading dock at your office you will need to be sure to ask for a liftgate and inside delivery.

The MBM Destroyit 4005 Level-4 Cross-Cut Shredder offers large busy offices a high level of security along with capacity and safety features. Here is a look at some of the strengths and weaknesses of the MBM Destroyit 4005 Level 4 Cross-Cut Shredder. Strengths:
This Destroyit 4005 shredder comes with a lot of features, but perhaps the best is the superior level of security that it offers. Level 3 is the lowest that we recommend for the destruction of most confidential information (and is in fact required per 2005 federal FACTA laws), and the MBM Destroyit 4005 Level 4 does that one better by producing shred particles of 3/32″ by 5/8″ that are rated by the shredder industry as Level 4, and thus appropriate for the destruction of documents that contain information crucial to the existence of your business.
The Destroyit 4005 Level 4 is a very capable machine giving you the ability to shred up to 20 sheets at a time (quite nice considering the high security level), and is rated for continuous use.
The cutting heads of the Destroyit 4005 Level 4 are guaranteed for life, and are made of hardened German steel.
The Destroyit 4005 Level 4 can not only handle staples and paper clips (fairly standard these days) it can also shred credit cards and CDs.
Shredder safety is something we always take a good hard look at in our reviews, and in this realm too, the Destroyit 4005 Level 4 impresses. There is a clear, hard plastic shield at the feed opening to keep hands and other objects away from the cutters, and which also keeps shards from flying out of the opening when you are shredding CDs. The machine also has a paper-jam preventing auto reverse mode in case you try to feed it too much paper–which is unlikely thanks to the capacity indicator lights. If a jam does occur, the machine will cut off power immediately. Other safety features that are nice, if fairly standard in the industry, are the power cutoffs when the cabinet door is ajar and when the waste bin is full.
The Destroyit 4005 Level 4 is a simple machine to operate with its large, easy to read control button and color coding system to show you what mode the machine is in. You can set the shredder to start automatically when you place paper in the feed (and stop when the job is over), so you don’t have to turn it on and off – a nice time saver. There’s a sleep mode that kicks in after an hour of inactivity, which saves energy too.
All shredders need periodic oiling, it’s just that some are easier to maintain in this way than others. The Destroyit 4005 Level 4′s automatic oiling system makes the lubrication process just about as easy as it could possibly be. There isn’t even any pumping involved like in some other shredders. The handy indicator lights let you know that the oiling system is working and also tell you when the oil bottle is empty.
Weaknesses:
When is a strength a weakness? While the Destroyit 4005 Level 4 offers a high level of security, there is a little bit of a trade off in sheet capacity. While the capacity is great for a Level 4 machine, the Destroyit 4005 Level 3 offers a security level that is FACTA-compliant and also gives you the ability to shred up to 32 pages at a time (compared to the Level 4′s 20 sheets). The machines generally cost the same, so you will have to decide which is more important to you.
This is a large shredder that is designed for centralized office use. It has a large motor and is a sizable machine. As such, this machine costs almost five thousand dollars. That may not be in the budget for all organizations. However, it is comparable to other level four central office shredders.

The MBM Destroyit 4004 Cross Cut Shredder is designed to shred large volumes of material on a daily basis. Here are a few of the strengths and weaknesses of the MBM Destroyit 4004 Cross Cut Shredder.
The Destroyit 4004 Cross Cut has pretty unique motor. At around 2 4/5 Hp, it’s impressively powerful as far as shredder motors go, and is purported to run at 48 feet per minute, which is also pretty high. The real uniqueness come with the automatic 2-speed functionality. It has a “power” mode it uses when shredding large amounts of paper in a single pass, and a “speed mode for shredding lighter loads. We’re not sure which will get you through a pile of papers faster (bulk or speed) but we were impressed with the 4004′s ability to handle either.
The 4004 Cross Cut states the capacity to shred 40 sheets of paper per pass and we found that it performed at right around that capability without much of a problem. It was necessary to fan the sheets out across the width of the paper feed in to get there, but that’s a small quibble. With all shredders, you have to keep in mind that sheet capacities vary according to power supply and paper weight, so 40 is probably best case scenario with the 4004 Cross Cut-and it’s an impressive capacity.
The 4004 Cross Cut destroys documents in a cross cut pattern (as the name suggests) and offers a Security Level of 3. This is a great security level, and is FACTA compliant, meaning that you will be within federal regulations regarding the destruction of documents that contain the types of information that identity thieves frequently use to commit their crimes.
Operating the Destroyit 4004 Cross Cut is a simple task. There is just one switch that controls all functions, so there is never any question what mode the machine is in. An electronic eye at the throat opening makes it possible for the user to choose automatic on/off mode, so you can simply place your paper in the slot and walk away.
The 16 inch feed opening is great for larger computer printout sheets.
While there isn’t an overabundance of high-tech safety features, the Destroyit 4004 Cross Cut has a few. There is an automatic reverse mode when the machine has been fed too much paper, and if a paper jam actually occurs, the motor will stop automatically. There is also power cut off in the instances of the cabinet door being open and when the waste box is too full to ensure safe operation of the shredder.
We do like the small touches that add to the convenience factor of the shredder, including the fact that it is mounted on casters and that the shred bag is large and rolls out for easy emptying.
Weaknesses:
The 4004 Cross Cut is not the quietest shredder we have ever come across, so it might be best placed in a separate room rather than in a central location within your office. There is an optional sound reduction cover for the 4004 Cross Cut, but we have not had a chance to check it out yet.
Having been recently impressed with MBM’s newer “Safety Protection System,” the 4004 Cross Cut machine seems almost naked without it (though we still rate it as a very safe machine). If you want similar capacity and some more advanced safety features, please check out the newer 4002 or 4005 lines of Destroyit shredders.
