If you have an ill-maintained cigar humidor, chances are, it is sitting on one of your shelf gathering dusts and waiting to be disposed at any given time. If you throw away the old humidor and have a new one still the dust problem is not solved and the result will be the same again.

The equatorial as well as the tropical regions produce tobacco from which cigars are made.  But once cigars are manufactured and left these countries, the quality tends to degrade. Cigars when shipped from the origin country to the other place have to undergo many climatic and humidity changes. All these activities wrecks the taste of the cigar as it is used to mature in most controlled atmosphere.

This calls the need for cigar humidor. Usually the cigar humidor is made of wood which keeps the moisture of the cigar intact. The cigar retains its flavor as the moisture is not allowed to escape which is maintained by the humidifier.

People tend to commit the same mistake of placing the cigars in the humidors after buying them. It is absolutely wrong as the right humidity is needed first in the cigar humidors. If you try using the humidors immediately they will absorb the moisture of the cigars and it ruins the flavor of the cigar. The wood of the humidor has to be re-humidified so that the ideal humidity is set.

Unless there is a humidifier in the box the humidity inside the box can’t be maintained.  Squirting the right amount of distilled water or humidification solution (propylene glycol and distilled water) will keep the humidity level in the box perfectly. Hygrometer would tell you if the humidor is keeping the right humidity inside.

The cigars and old wines have many things in common as they both mature the longer they are kept in the controlled environment. Keeping the humidor at 70 degrees Fahrenheit will help it to function properly.  To know if you are getting the right humidity, your cigar humidor should have the humidifier and the hygrometer.

Believe it or not, you can come across two different schools of thought regarding mixing cigars in the same humidor. One group believes you absolutely do not mix, and the camp will talk of the benefits. When it comes down to it, your own experience can tell you which way to go.

In the Purest corner
In this corner, the belief is that if you keep all like cigars together, that helps in preserving all of their unique flavors and aromas. Ok, in the end you collect your sticks just because of those particular qualities. Some cigars have a more full bodied profile, and of course, others are mild.

Non Traditionalists say
Now in the other corner, people are not so called traditionalists believe that mixing cigars can potentially have real benefits. Keeping an assortment of varying cigars in one humidor helps flavors and aromas to enhance each other and actually improve their qualities.

In addition, the theory being that the older sticks could take on and absorb some moisture from the younger cigars.

Your Corner?
If you haven’t already determined your stance in the matter, it’s a great opportunity to see for yourself which corner you’re in. You can do sort of an experiment. Take a handful of your cigars of varying profiles and keep in one humidor. You don’t want to take too many of them due to possible undesired results and risk more than necessary. Now, keep them in that same environment for a minimum of a couple weeks, or more. All good things take some time. Also, you want to keep monitoring things like a constant 70% humidity level, and of course, making sure this particular box keeps a proper seal.

Some questions are in order
Now it’s the day of judgment. You want to take your time for a careful evaluation. When you test and smoke this test batch, some questions will help determine which corner you’re in.
Did any particular smoke change in flavor?
Did the flavors get enhanced or did they get ruined?
Did any of their aromas change?
Did wrapper leafs change in any quality?

Lastly, but very important, did dryer smokes pull in any moisture from others?
Of course, these factors will result from the conditions of the atmosphere the cigars were kept in. Given the environment was a constant 70% level and no moisture was able to leak out from an open seal, you should get a trustworthy batch to see what happened.

The questions mentioned above help you to see just where you stand judging from your preferences. You can judge which way you go in the debate. You decide from your personal experience with this, and not have to rely on what either side says.

What are the different parts of a cigar?  Many long-time smokers enjoy their stogies without learning the basic parts of their cigar.  While it’s true that you can enjoy a cigar without knowing how it was put together, learning the basic parts of a cigar can be instrumental in helping you choose the best quality cigars.

The first thing many smokers notice about a cigar is the wrapper, the layer of tobacco on the outside of a cigar.  A cigar’s wrapper is very important because it provides much of the flavor of the cigar.  The best quality tobacco leaves are usually used to construct the wrapper.  They range in color from very clear (claro) to very dark (oscuro).

Last but certainly not least is the filler used to make a cigar.  The filler is the tobacco.  Generally, filler can be either long or short.  Long filler consists of whole tobacco leaves, while short filler consists of scraps.
Binders are known as the ‘intermediate leaves.’  They are used to hold the tobacco filler together.  Binders can vary considerably.
What should you look for when purchasing a humidor?  —The good humidor should close completely, with a tight fitting lid that will keep the cigars well kept from the elements and prevent any exchange of moisture.  Seams should be smooth and well fitted for cigars.  Cedar, especially Spanish cedar is ideal for the interior of the humidor.  Of course, make certain your brand of cigars fits well into any humidor you are considering purchasing.

Many cigar aficionados claim that the ideal temperature for storing cigars is 70 degree F.  Any lower will tend to age the cigar, rather than keep it at a constant level.  Humidors are not meant to age, but rather to preserve the integrity, flavor, and color of the cigar.

If you are not an experienced cigar smoker, you may be wondering why cigar aficionados use humidors.  Humidors are used to store and protect cigars so that they are kept at their peak flavor.  A humidor works by keeping a cigar at a constant temperature, somewhere between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and about 70-72% humidity.

Buying cigars can be like buying fine wine….it can get expensive! Don’t shortchange yourself or your cigars buy storing them in a substandard cigar humidor. This article will discuss the major components of a quality cigar humidor.

Below is a short list of the more important items to consider when selecting a cigar humidor:

1. Seal: The most important aspect of a humidor is its ability to hold humidity. The seal will do that. When evaluating a cigar humidor, drop the lid from approximately 2-3 inches to see how it closes. If it lands on a cushion of air, the seal is fine. If it “clangs” when the lid is dropped, walk away because that isn’t a quality humidor….in fact, “it’s just a box”. Look to see what hinges are used to close the lid. The best cigar humidors use hidden quadrant hinges and/or piano hinges, as they supply the best seal possible.

2. Exterior Construction: The sidewalls and bottom of the humidor should be at a minimum, ½” thick. Thicker than average sidewalls will create a more stable humidor interior with less fluctuations in temperature or humidity. Large temperature and humidity fluctuations will ruin your cigars. Check to see if the outside bottom of the humidor is lined with felt to prevent scratching of the furniture that you place your humidor on.

3. Interior Construction: It is extremely important that your humidor be lined in Kiln-Dried Spanish Cedar. This is the industry standard when it comes to quality made humidors. Kiln-Dried Spanish Cedar provides for less aromatic aromas than other woods which makes it the more desirable choice when selecting a cigar humidor. “You don’t want overly aromatic woods in your humidor as it may impart an unwanted flavor to your cigars”. Additionally, Spanish cedar is less prone to warping which is imperative when used in a high humidity application such as a cigar humidor. Should the interior of your humidor warp, the seal on the humidor will be broken and your cigars rendered useless. Having the interior Kiln-Dried gets rid of all the natural moisture that all woods contain. If the humidor you’re looking at has trays, make sure that they are ventilated to assure the humidity in your humidor can circulate to all cigars in the humidor.

4. Style: Are you interested in impressing your poker playing buddies or will a less fancy cigar humidor do? Matte finish or a multiple layer high gloss finish? One for the golf bag? There are so many styles to choose from it can be pretty confusing. Just make sure the humidor fits your personal style.

5. Quality: Don’t let price alone influence your decision as to what is a quality cigar humidor. There are many humidors on the market today that retail for less than 0 that will keep your cigars perfectly fresh for a long time. Look at all the variables discussed in steps 1-4 and you should have an easier time finding a quality humidor.

Try to avoid mixing mild and strong cigar in a single humidor…especially if they come without cellophane wrappers. They will marry their aromas and you will not have the cigars you thought you had. We always advise multiple cigar humidors if they have premium cigars without cellophane wrappers. Many premium cigars, such as La Gloria Cubana Serie line, have no cellophane on their cigars and these should not come in contact with other un-cellophaned cigars in your humidor.

Take your time…If you follow the 5 steps mentioned above, you will have a much easier time in finding the best cigar humidor for you.

A cigar glass humidor is actually very similar to other kinds of humidors except for the glass top that is installed on it. The size of the cigar humidor varies. If you are not keeping a large number of cigars, you can get a glass topped humidor that can hold anywhere from 25 to 50 cigars. But if you like having plenty of cigars around, there are glass humidors that can hold up to 150 cigars, which would be appropriate for you.

A good cigar glass humidorshould be made from high quality wood that has been finished nicely. It should fit perfectly to form a tight seal and it should have some locks installed, to prevent people from getting too curious with it. To ensure that you are able to use the humidor properly, choose a model that comes with an instruction manual.

This will allow you to know the right method of using it as well as how to maintain it properly. The manual should be written in a clear and concise language so that you will understand what the manufacturer wants to convey perfectly.

If you want to customize yourglass cigar humidor, choose a model that comes with a brass plate. This can be engraved with your name or any text of your choosing.
If you are a heavy smoker or you want plenty of cigars in stock to entertain guests, you would naturally choose a humidor that can hold up to 150 cigars. When choosing this kind of humidor, precise organization is the key.

Aside from the tempered glass installed on its top, a humidor meant for holding large number of cigars should have drawers for easy access and organization. It should also have drawer handles installed as well drawer bottoms that are lined with felt.

The cigar glass humidor should also be made from scratch proof material to maintain its beauty and appeal for a long time.

You don’t have to be a cigar aficionado to choose an O.K. humidor, and there are several accepted ones uncommitted at temperate prices. Keep a few elementary rules in mind and you’re certain to find one to suit your size needs, and get a magnetic decoration to boot.

Choice of materials is invariably the first detail in selecting a good humidor.

Spanish cedar lining is consistently the first choice, and for solid rationales. It has desirable moisture evenness characteristics, absorbing water quickly and let it go again when the air inside is too barren. It also is swerving impervious, making it probable to keep a good seal.

Mahogany is a prevalent substitute, but for reasons of aesthetics as much as capacity. It’s more expensive, so the purpose for the change is not to lower the price. It’s usually exploited on the exterior because of its first-class looks, with Spanish cedar still exploited for the home. Still, some good cigar humidors do use it as a liner and it can do a capable job.

Larger humidors, as well as lower quality ones, will sometimes substitute any number of things: plastic, synthetic wood, or metal. Their use should be bypassed. Even in this age of miracle materials, there is still no good alternative to natural wood, namely mahogany.

The humidor should seal swell, though it doesn’t need and should not be wholly airtight. Some miniscule amount of airflow is acceptable to avoid accumulation of fungus. Needed perspiration should, instead, be replaced by an instrument that keeps the cigars’ container at the flop humidness.

That attribute leads promptly to the next important element in a good cigar humidor: the humidity system. That system has two parts, which include the unit that releases and absorbs water and a device to measure the humidity level. The first is named the humidifier; the second is called a hygrometer.

The humidifier could be something as simple, yet still adequate, as a tiny sponge which is soaked with distilled water. Sometimes, especially these days, propylene glycol is added to alter the rate of aerated irrigated exchange. Often, that sponge will be located in a tiny little mesh ‘basket’ to maintained it secure. The ‘basket’ is then attached via Velcro or a magnet in the lid.

Temperature regulation is important, of course. However, few but the priciest humidors will have any built-in thermal control unit. Most will depend on suitable arrangement to keep cigars at the ideal 68F/20C mark. That’s not usually a problem in the typical cigar smoker’s interior where air conditioning and modern heating are probable.

Lastly, aside from aesthetic criteria, comes the election of size. Smokers who indulge one of Man’s finest pastimes – smoking cigars – lone at times will necessitated no more than a modest desktop humidor, one designed to hold 10-20 cigars. That not only keeps the cost down, but it also makes humidity and temperature control easier. Aficionados will want a cigar humidor expansive enough to well store all their desired stogies for months or even years without decomposition. A humidor that stores 100-400 will suited the bill.

The cigar humidor’s appearance, as expected, is consistently going to change the final selection, once an assortment of good ones is obtainable. Here, nobody can offer any useful guidance. Personal preference reigns supreme, just as in the selection of the cigar itself.

Canada’s Most Valuable Cuban Cigar Humidor

Cohiba 35th Anniversary Humidor

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) June 4, 2008

The Cohiba brand is not only the king of Cuban cigars, but cigars all over the world. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of this legendary Cuban cigar brand, Habanos S.A (Cuba) released only 500 special edition humidors way back in 2002. The Vancouver Cigar Company would like to announce that they have the last Cohiba 35th Anniversario Humidor (# 422/500) available for retail in North America, and possibly, the world.

The Cohiba brand started production in 1966 and is likely the most renowned tobacco product on the planet. That distinction was earned, among other reasons, by being the gift of Cuban leaders to other world leaders in Cuba and abroad.

All 135 Cohiba cigars that come in this humidor have been aging for over 6 years. “This is definitely a masterpiece released by Habanos S.A. Since its a dedication to the Cohiba brand, it makes the complete package ever so valuable,” says Trevor Wallace of the Vancouver Cigar Company.

The vitolas (Size of cigars), are all dressed to impress with a special cigar band solely created for this 35th anniversary, edition. Included are 35 Cohiba Lanceros, 20 Cohiba Espléndidos, 20 Cohiba Robustos, 20 Siglo V and two unqiue Cohiba sizes (20 Gran Corona) and (20 Piramides) that have only been included in this edition and will never be mass produced again.

The humidor itself is a thing of beauty. With its handmade cedar construction, bird’s-eye maple completed, and a hand-crafted inlay presenting the Cohiba brand logo on top, this truly makes the 35th Anniversario 1 of the most beautiful humidors ever made.

“I have seen a lot of wonderful humidors come from Habanos, but the detailed work on the Cohiba 35th Anniversario simply takes the cake!” explains Mr. Wallace.
